Gas Monkey. Fordmods Newbie. He said to get upto rwkw on the standard turbo I need to get the rods changed as they don't like pushing them above rwkw on a tune. I'm at and simply want if possible. I have the full APS kit on the car as well. He said that because the motor has low k's all I need is standard size gudgeon pin and crank sizes, just a thicker connecting rod, and the stock pistons will be ok to reuse. He also recons that its probably best to pull the motor out, then rip the head off and sump to replace the old rods.

Well I can do all this myself, but what I need to know does this sound right from you guys that have done this before. And what is the best brand rods to use, and any part numbers I need. Further down the track I may try and get rwkw or even higher if I was to change out the plenum and upgrade the fuel delivery and turbo.

So can anyone help with info and maybe a quick overrun of whats involved or tricks that will make the job easier. Like would I need to do new crank bearings or anything or will every thing just swap over? Oompa Loompa.

If it were me, I would be changing the bottom end as you will starting from a stronger point. I know it is dearer but, it would be better to start with a newer part and eventually save money. If you were to try and chat with a Ford dealer, you might be able to get a better price.

You may also need to change the sump as the oil dipstick tube is in a different position.OK as we know the BA had the weaker rods, so after talking to a mechanic, and as my xr6 hasn't even done 70K yet. Like would I need to do new crank bearings or anything or will every thing just swap over? Guess I need to ring around to see what a rebore costs with parts put together. When you mention timing gear do you just mean a good brand chain or more?

Engine Rebuild Kit – XR6 Turbo

Do you have an advise on what are the best brands to get? I'm thinking you have built a few of these motors right? If you fit a set of spool rods to it it will be cheap.

I would disassemble the whole motor and check everything as it goes back together to be sure but at 70k if it's been looked after the bores will still be like brand new. When buying the rods spool usually come with the rods still requiring a Finnish hone to the small end bush which most machine shops should be able to do. Then it's just a case of checking all the clearance as you reassemble it. Would also add in there whilst your at it billet oil pump gears and port the housing and put all the upgraded atomic timing chain and guides.

And some headstuds because why not. If your capable of doing assembling the motor your self it will be relatively cheap. Plus obviously all the gears, timing set etc but will be a stronger motor then a fg short. It lost shifting fromnow I've lost all but 1 and R. Its my baby and and I have spent over 5K replacing every bush with superpro and pedders adj height and dampener suspension.

Put a King sway bar in the front as well.

The car has sat in my garage under a cover for years, I know xr6's have come down, but I got it for a bargain and it has the ADR approved APS kit and everything is seriously like new.

I'm going to ditch the auto, will be doing the boxswap when I pull out the motor for the rods. Going to do the duel zone at the same time, have all the parts like I said. This is what I'm talking about! And of course I will get the block checked in the process.

Only other extra thing I would add to the list as an option is to upgrade the wrist pins in the Pistons to the " thick pins. I've pulled a couple of my mates motors apart lately after a couple of years abuse and have all had bend wrist pins in them which were the pins that come with the forged piston kits. If you chose to do Pistons aswell it gets quite abit more expensive because you will need to bore and hone the motor.

At 70k I doubt they will be worn enough to worry. If your tuner is happy to tune to the power your looking for on cast Pistons then there is no reason to go forged really. Noted and " wrist pins added to the list. Yep those forged pistons are bloody expensive, need my stocks trading to keep moving up this week and it could be a maybe?Very nice!

Nice and clean, actually like it netter on the stockies. Nice bud, I'm normally a Holden guy when it comes between the two, but this looks really neat. Props to you. I love falcons with a passion, and this has almost taken the cake. Well done of keeping it so clean.

Looks sick with standard wheels. Nice plates too.

Engine Building Part 4: Pistons, Rings, and Rods

Were you drunk when you put your rego sticker on? Ford should just release their 'performance' models at this height standard!.

Gl with it. Looks nice man. Impressive power. I've been looking at getting an XR6T. They're going fairly cheap these days. Looks better with the stockies.

How come fuck all power with the mods? You can still make decent power with the factory crossover and the standard bottom end.

Looks nice as! QUOTE xy Oct 22PM not with the ba bottom end you cant get more, safely anyway, sure i could run 14 psi and get round hp but couldnt afford to break anything. Yeah ya can. If you run a better cooler and crossover it'll be fine. I ran rwhp on 16psi for 2 years. And its still going strong with the new owner. Down to who tunes it man. And who tuned your car? I am pretty sure Anchor's was a Mk2 but like he said It all comes down to the tune When it comes down to tuners just from a tune I made 60hp difference in tune at the same psi.

Yep another BA turbo owner here running 14psi rwkw no dramas at all can be done easy like was said by others its all in the tune, mine gets a hard time occasionaly, have had it for 3 years and no sign of the little ba rods letting go yet haha.

Mine was a MK2, but that doesn't mean anything. You've already got the T I so want one of these real bad.

Like it alot mate and nice power. Now to go tell the missus I'm trading the xr6 in on a turbo one. Nice one! Great for bragging rights but getting power down is a huge issue.Skip to content. I do suggest you read the lot you may think im an idiot or have a laugh I am writing this at 2AM due to Formula Drift is on live feed at the moment so yeeeaah Ive Been toying with the idea of removing the standard knuckle up front and upper control arm SO other than my stupid way of gaining a considerable amount of lock for drift it would be coilovers all round custom rear so the spring is actually over the shock, camber correction kits blah blah, sway bars front and rear from whiteline DOT DOT DOT all the polyurethane bushes known to man for the BA falcon Throw some coil overs in there and you'd have good bang for buck.

If the lca gets in the way it might be easier to have someone fabricate one rather than try and get parts from another car to fit. Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car I'm on a computer. The Barra is a family of V8 and inline-6 engines used by Ford Australia between and The inline-6 engines are unique to the Australian manufactured Falcon and Territory and were developed and manufactured in GeelongVictoria.

The Barra was first introduced in the BA Falconnamed after the " Barramundi " code name used during the development of the BA update engine. The V8 engine, from Essex, Ontario, were discontinued with the FG model, whereas the I6 engines continued production until 26 Septembercoinciding with the end of production of the Falcon and Territory on 7 October.

This engine is found in the six-cylinder variants of the BA Falcon also derivative models Fairmont and Fairlaneand SX Territoryand was produced between late and mid It is aesthetically the same and mechanically very similar to the Barra Changes from its predecessor include an increase in compression ratio, a slight revision of the cam profiles, a revision of the air intake system, the introduction of dual independent variable camshaft timing, a secondary knock sensor and an upgraded ECU, which allowed for more sophisticated ignition timing and spark control.

These changes lead to a slight increase in power to kW. These changes achieved power and economy improvements over the Barra It is internally very similar to its predecessor, with the 5 kW power increase found through the changes introduced by the Barra revised camshaft profiles and more powerful ECU, enabling dual independent VCT with an extra knock sensor.

Aesthetically the engine is the same as the previous model, with the exception of the Territory Turbo using a black rocker cover and a top mounted intercooler. In Maythe engine received a minor internal upgrade which addressed concerns of bending con-rods, by introducing stronger con-rods.

The increase in power is achieved through the use of higher boost pressures from the otherwise under-utilised large Garrett GT turbocharger, a larger intercooler, revised air intake. These are differentiated from the standard turbo engines by the unique FPV blue-coloured rocker cover. With the introduction of the BF Falcon inthe T also inherited the upgrades found in the T, but the power figures were left unchanged.

Although the power figures for the revised turbo engine mimic the old FPV turbo I6, the engines are quite different. It has a redesigned low-profile log style intake manifold, a smaller turbocharger which spools faster, a new intercooler, redesigned pistons to increase compression. This engine introduces a transient over-boost feature for a maximum of 10 seconds when optimal atmospheric conditions are met when under full throttle, which increases torque to a maximum of Nm.

It was produced between mid and midending production when FPV shut down. This engine is the most powerful six cylinder produced in Australia and was built in very limited numbers, with only for Australia and 50 for New Zealand True production isas 10 pre-production vehicles were built and auctioned off. Each engine had its own numbered build plaque attached to the rocker cover, which is painted in the same colour as the Territory Turbo rocker cover.

The engine is based internally upon the Barra T, with extras added from the Barra T variant such as the turbo, intercooler and injectors. In an Australian first, Ford also employed a custom designed carbon fibre air intake which increased airflow by 45 percent.

It was chosen to base the engine on the T instead of the T due to the increased compression ratio. According to Ford Chief Program Engineer David Burn and Program Manager Justin Capicchiano, there are differences in the internals between turbo models, however no forged internals have been used.

The E-Gas engine is designed to run on autogas only. It features a low-performance, high-reliability, low-maintenance Vialle closed-loop single-point venturi-style LPG-injector-less carburetion system in lieu of the standard sequential petrol injection system.

This engine was carried over to the FG Falcon with only one option of a 4-Speed automatic transmission, without traction control but was replaced in mid by the EcoLPi system, which featured the ZF 6HP26 6-speed automatic transmission and traction control as per fitted to the petrol models. This engine was launched in as a replacement for the E-Gas engine. It features a liquid phase injection autogas system, allowing for much higher power and torque than previously.

On the 23rd of MayFord Australia confirmed that the Barra engine would be discontinued along with the Ford Falcon and Territory by October Ford Australia's engine manufacturing operations ceased on 26 September and car assembly on 7 October Ford Australia president Bob Graziano cited unprofitability due to high labour costs and dwindling market share for the demise of local manufacturing.
